FAQ

McHale School of Irish Dance Online

My Child dances River Dance around the house and is ready for lessons, but she's 3 years old.

Certainly encourage your child to dance, but she/he won't be ready for dance classes until the age of 5 years.  Sometimes I find that this may still be young but it depends on the child and amount of patience the parents have.  If you hang in there with your little one, eventually it will click.

What investment do I need to make as far as supplies etc?

My philosophy, you shouldn't invest in anything until you're sure this is what your child wants to do.  The first night of class they need to wear a comfortable pair of shoes and bring a water bottle.

Where in the world do I find those dancing shoes?

The soft shoes are called gillies and run about $34-$40  sometimes used shoes may come available.  I can let you know when your child is ready.  Some parents make the shoes a gift for Christmas or Birthdays which is a great idea.  Once your child is ready for hard shoes I will let you know again where to purchase them, the cost is $120 - $135.   These are a very expensive gift for your child to outgrow before their ready for the sake of playing River Dance.

My Child has been taking lessons for over a year, why is she/he still in the beginners class?

Classes are self paced.  It may not be uncommon for a child to stay in the beginners class until they master all of the basic steps.  Children will be moved at the teachers discretion.    In each level of class we break the students down in additional levels.  In the beginners class we could have three levels running at the same time.  I find it much better for the student to be challenged but not over whelmed with the next level.

I will certainly let you and your child know when it's time to move up.

Where can I rent one of those dancing costumes for my child?

The costumes are purchased they are not rented or lent out.  When you child is ready for performances and you are ready for a financial investment you will be able to have a dress made.  New beginner dresses are about $300 and advanced dresses $400.  Sometimes used dresses may come available, as other students out grow their dresses.

Can I pay as my child attends class instead of the session fee?

There are number of cost associated with running a session of dancing.  You a responsible for the entire session fee regardless of how many classes your child attends.   In situations where students have had accidents or health reasons for not attending, I will certainly take that into consideration and possibly credit the next session.

Why can't parents stay and watch classes?

I find there is to much distraction to the students allowing parents and siblings to stay in the room.  We have tried several times in the past and it has never worked out.  Plus I find your child dances better when you're not present.
